Scottish Rainforest survey for research
Can you assist Douglas with his studies and research please?
My name is Douglas and I’m completing a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management. As part of my honours project, I’m investigating how our understanding and perception of the Scottish rainforest impacts the conservation of this special habitat. As such I’m reaching out to people from every region of Scotland and asking them to complete a short survey linked below. The survey is completely anonymous, and I’d greatly appreciate if you took the time to contribute to my research.

Did you miss the February Ceilidh with live music and a bar…?
Big mistake if so, as everyone who attended would tell you! However, don’t despair as we hope to hold another before the end of the year. More details in due course.
Our primary schoolchildren provided the initial display, setting adults some high standards of Scottish Country Dance to achieve when the live band took over and the dancing began for all!
A lively affair it was too – great music provided by an excellent band and many dances enjoyed by all ages.
Thanks to the organisers for that great night – also doubled up as a successful fundraiser for Shawhead Village Hall.
Shawhead Women’s Rural Institute – 2024 programme announced
After all the excitement of 2023’s festive season, you’ll need some dates for next year’s diary!
Shawhead WRI will meet at the Village Hall, 7.30pm on the following dates and the planned programme is as follows:
January 17th
Bobby Jess, talks about Robert Burns.
February 21st
Graham Watson, from Moniaive shop, talks about his trip to the King’s Coronation.
March 20th
Lynda Mackie, member of the family history society, gives a talk on local old love letters.
April 17th
Anne Booth, demonstrates how to wear scarves and how to tie them.
May 15th
Christine Mathews, demonstrates how to cook with honey. This is an open evening, visitors are especially welcome.
But remember, visitors are very welcome at all the meetings so please do come along and join in for a sociable and interesting evening!

Windfarm Grants
Our community is entitled to an annual grant of up to £2000. It is however a condition of each annual grant that it be spent on suitable community projects and, if not fully so spent, then only the lesser amount will be available in the following year. The Community Council accordingly welcomes applications for funding for local projects for consideration; the application form can be downloaded from here or from the Secretary of the Community Council or the Irongray Community Trust which administers the sums received.
The criteria published by Annandale and Nithsdale Community Benefit Company for approval of applications are similarly available but, in broad terms, they should demonstrate benefit to the community and not be for political, religious, entertainment or hospitality purposes or any purpose adverse to the interests of the windfarm owners.
Your input will be appreciated both to give us ideas as to how the money can best be spent on behalf of the community and to ensure that we do not miss out on available funds.
